Modern Samsun known as Amisos by Greeks and Byzantines, Missos by Romans, and then Samsun by Seljuk Turks and Ottoman Turks lies between the deltas of the Kizilirmak and Yellirmak rivers on the northern coast of Turkey. It is the largest city and the main port for trade of the middle Black Sea coast in Turkey. Amisos lies within the region referred to by Greeks as the Pontos. The Greeks knew the Black Sea as early as the 8th century BC. This view is based on archaeological evidence and on early Greek legends such as Jason and the Argonauts who set out to find the Golden Fleece in Colchis. The earliest Greek trade with the lands around the Black Sea was reflected in the Greek legends about the origin of iron. According to these legends items of iron first came from the Trans-Caucasian regions. Also, according to Apollonius of Rhodes' story of The Voyage of the Argo, the mythical Amazons lived just east of Amisos in three towns near Themiscrya near the mouth of the Thermodon (modern Terme) river. Amisos was founded around 564 BC. The Greek settlers in both Sinope and Amisos had to deal with the indigenous people from the beginning of their colonial activities, since their survival depended on access to the native territory to obtain agricultural products, minerals and metals.

Hera is the wife and one of three sisters of Zeus in the Olympian pantheon of Greek mythology and religion. Her chief function was as the goddess of women and marriage. In Greek mythology, a little owl baby accompanies Athena, the virgin goddess of wisdom, and has been used as a symbol of knowledge, wisdom, perspicacity and erudition throughout the Western world.
